Remembering Dr. William C. "Bill" Welch

The Texas Nursery & Landscape Association (TNLA) joins the Texas horticulture community in mourning the loss of Dr. William Carlisle "Bill" Welch, who passed away on June 8, 2026.

Dr. Welch was a respected horticulturist, educator, author, and industry advocate whose influence extended across Texas and throughout the South. During his 41-year career at Texas A&M University, he dedicated his life to advancing horticultural education, promoting professional standards, and sharing his passion for gardening and landscapes with countless industry professionals, volunteers, and homeowners.

TNLA members may know Dr. Welch best for his contributions to the Texas Certified Landscape Professional (TCLP) program. He played an instrumental role in helping develop the certification exam and, for many years, generously volunteered his time and expertise to evaluate the design portion of the examination. His commitment helped ensure that generations of landscape professionals were held to the high standards of knowledge and professionalism that continue to define the program today.

In recognition of his many contributions to the association and the industry, Dr. Welch was named an Honorary Member of TNLA.

Beyond his work with TNLA, Dr. Welch was widely recognized as one of the most influential voices in Southern horticulture. He authored numerous books and articles, educated thousands through Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, collaborated with Master Gardeners across the state, and served as a trusted resource for landscape and gardening professionals for decades.

His accomplishments were many, but perhaps his greatest legacy was his willingness to share knowledge, mentor others, and elevate the profession he loved. Whether through his teaching, writing, speaking engagements, or service to organizations throughout the horticulture industry, Dr. Welch helped shape the careers of countless professionals and inspired a deeper appreciation for gardening and landscapes throughout Texas.

TNLA extends its deepest condolences to his wife, Lucille, his son William and family, and all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

Dr. Welch's impact on the Texas green industry will be felt for generations to come, and his contributions to TNLA and the Texas Certified Landscape Professional program will not be forgotten.
